The Nigerian Insurers Association, NIA, said it intends to introduce the marine insurance module on the Nigerian Insurance Industry Database, NIID, before the end of first quarter of 2014.
According to the NIA, the move is part of efforts to eliminate the use of fake marine documents in the country.
The Director General of NIA, Mr. Sunday Thomas, told journalists recently, that the NIID, which is an initiative of the NIA is an information technology-based system meant to facilitate easy collation and dissemination of statistical and other information relating to insurance, while at the same time, help to check activities of fake documents.
He said that while only the status of motor insurance policy can be verified on the website at present, the NIA has been working on other modules to make is easier for the insuring public to verify the genuineness of all insurance contracts arranged in the country.
The NIID project, according to the NIA director general, is scheduled to be delivered in modules, with the NIA having also successfully concluded the deployment of the first module, which is the motor vehicle insurance module.
“The NIA plans to make marine insurance the second module on the NIID in view of the fact that after motor insurance, the next class of insurance business where fake documents are rampant is marine insurance business.
“To facilitate the process, the association has already employed a programmer scheduled to resume in January 2014. On assumption of duty, he will be saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that the marine insurance module is ready before the end of March 2014.
While working towards the deployment of other modules of the NIID, the association has been appealing to all operators in the industry to take maximum advantage of the NIID in their delivery of quality service which will drive the needed volume” the DG said.
He explained that with the deployment of motor vehicle insurance module, it will become impossible for motor vehicle owners to drive their vehicles on Nigerian roads without valid insurance documents and it is envisaged this will go a long way to reduce the leakages in the system and put an end to the activities of traders in fake insurance documents.
He noted also that with the mobile device, which is a product of the NIID, it is now easy for law enforcement agencies and relevant authorised persons to identify genuine insurance documents, adding the association hopes the effort of NIA will assist in checking the activities of fake insurance operators in the country
